Working with greenscreen is really a skill on its own. It’s a lot of fun, but it can also be frustrating because of the green reflections. Personally, I don’t really use it anymore. That said, the setup you bought is much more versatile than just greenscreen work. You can easily use different backdrops with it instead of the green cloth. You can spend a lot of money online on backdrops, or just go to a local fabric store and pick up a few meters of fabric in colors you like.
My tip: get a mid-grey backdrop. You can turn it into any color you want by lighting it with colored lights. Watch a few videos on how to work with softboxes, and you’ll be creating great photos in no time. Good luck, I’m really curious to hear about your experiences!![]()
Brilliant tip, thank you!
I’m curious to see all the new toys and find out how they work. Damn, a year until retirement and time to really have fun!
Kool. I use flashlights too. I’ll pick one of those up.
Wait a minute. You used a doll skeleton as a light stand! ![]()
That’s actually really cool haha! ![]()
I’m not a professional photographer, but I sometimes use a green or blue screen, especially when I need to composite one of my photos into another. For example, with Hadaly in Adèle Blanc-Sec: a photo taken at my house was composited into another taken in a dinosaur garden.
Not just a light stand. It’s my most versatile tool. ![]()
Whoa, that is so well done!!
Thank you! It’s not very hard to do with a simple photo-editing program. The only tricky part of this project is cutting Adèle into two pieces. I did it this way because I couldn’t take my Hadaly doll to the dinosaur park. But I’m planning to do that this year…![]()
What I would do is to create a new layer with the part of the dino that cover her.
Overlay that over Adele and erase the bits around the dino that have to show the dino ‘over’ her. That prevents cutting up the model’s image and adjusting the parts.
Hard to explain but I hope you understand my meaning.
Yes, I completely understand what you’re saying, and… that’s actually what I did to create this image. Not by erasing, but by layering the part of the dinosaur that was supposed to be in front of Adèle. It’s a fairly time-consuming and meticulous process, but it’s not too difficult to pull off.
I hope you’ll be able to experiment with all of this. I also have a blue background (3m x 2m). It works well too. I could have used it for this montage since Hadaly’s clothes are green, but it wasn’t a problem. In that case, before cutting out the image, you need to increase the contrast.
The screen package arrived today. That was a story in itself. It was scheduled to arrive on Tuesday but I wasn’t home so I changed that to Wednesday. Then DHL let me know they would come on Tuesday. Whut? So I changed it again to Wednesday.
On Tuesday I got a mail from DHL telling me they were sorry they couldn’t deliver on Tuesday due to a sorting error and so it came on Wednesday. As I had originally planned.
Goodness…
Good grief, this thing is HUGE! Used only 3 of the 4 pipes and it almost exceeds the living room…
Wish me luck… ![]()
MAGIC!
Even with the wrinkles it’s nearly a breeze to remove the background. This took me about 30 seconds.

Congratulations!
I was just about to suggest that you irons the back before using it… That’s what I did with my two backdrops, but it’s not easy given their large size. I assume yours is 3m x 2m?
This thing is 3m x 3m. It’s giant sized, I can wrap my whole apartment in it. This first picture was an eye opener though. So easy to kill the background and put something else in its place.
Good morning @quillurion and great result! I too have a monster green background cloth. One thing I got was a handheld steamer. It makes getting the wrinkles out of these gigantic backdrops a heck of a lot easier than ironing them.
Roisin looks fabulous too! ![]()
Happy Dolling!
Now that’s an idea!
I can’t leave it up all the time; it’s too big. I folded it away for now. A steamer would be great indeed as I don’t iron. I refuse it.
Getting Roisin to model wasn’t hard hahaha!!
This is what I have. Does a pretty good job of getting rid of the wrinkles………when I actually DO use the thing! ![]()
Another thing I did was purchase some curtain rods and mount them on the walls near the ceiling, with clips on the rings. I stopped using the standing frame because of the hassle of setting it up and taking it down.
Have a great evening and Happy Dolling!
Bwahahaa!! Thank you for this. I’ll have a look around for something similar.
For my photo backdrops, I’ve been using a Bresser system for the past few months: two independent support stands onto which you hang the backdrop, which has been rolled up onto a PVC tube beforehand. For backdrops up to 2 meters wide, storing them vertically is easy. For 3-meter backdrops, you need to have a ceiling high enough in your home.
