Okay, big reveal sort of kind of, although there’s not many images yet. Not sure if there will be many, but I’m opening this topic anyway.
Hilda. A special character for me. In 2008 I participated in a silly writing ‘contest’ and came up with a character called Hilda the Wicked Witch. That sort of exploded into 27 books (self-)published so far and #28 on the way.
It got so wild (and Hilda’s funny stories so popular) that a friend in Bristol (UK) offered to paint a picture of Hilda if I could describe her to me. This is the result and I love it:
Fast forward to 2025. April came, and Isabella arrived. October came and I discovered LDN, after which Roisin came in. Then the idea struck me: why can’t I make Hilda more real? It took a while to find a doll that worked for her image, and I immediately went out to look for the right wig as well.
Hilda arrived today, and yes, that’s 4 wigs added! Good fun but she will wear her own hair:
It’s a character that has grown close to my heart over all those years. 17 years already! I had never thought I’d be able to see the real Hilda in my house.
That is interesting.
I have liked the female protagonist in the Thraxas series so much that I wanted to have a green doll. (did only find an old factory photo to attach)
But I would be interested to read one of your books. Maybe you can give me a PM where I could get a digital copy of your books.
Isn’t it fascinating how we can bring them ‘to life’ this way?
If you search for “hilda the wicked witch” in any search engine, my books are bound to pop up. They’re everywhere (Amazon, Kobo, Barnes&Noble, Apple, Smashwords). Also: the first 6 digital Hilda stories are free as they aren’t edited for proper English. That hasn’t stopped people from reading them.
Bringing a character to life is always cool and fun, but I can only imagine how good it is when it’s your own original character that you have been so invested in for years. Bravo!
I found it at a party store in the Horror and Halloween section. It’s called the “Swamp Witch Wig” and it was perfect on sight. It fits well and looks great on Hilda.
I’ve once tried recording the first book myself (it’s quite short) but then I found out how hard that is (keeping tone and volume the same, good grief…). I have an auto-narrated audiobook on Google Play, and right now there’s a similar one being processed on Amazon.
The google play link lets you hear a sample, maybe that’s good enough for you? (The Amazon one has a slightly slower narrator and sounds really pleasant.)
