I’ve been experimenting with my phone camera for a couple of months.
I have a somewhat recent / modern phone. The Samsung 23+.
(apparently the Samsung 25+ is available now. So forgive my “old person” perspective on “recent phone”)
Prior to trying my phone, my “go to” for doll photos was my Sony A7R4 camera,
(The A7R4 is now superseded by the A7R5 that came out in late 2022)
For my Sony camera, I use a Sony 24mm G Master lens. The 24mm lens seems to be the standard for most modern phone cameras too.
I was very impressed with the photo quality I could get with the phone camera. I put the phone camera in “portrait” mode to get the blurry background of the lower F stop lenses. I “assume” the phone cameras achieve this with digital software, the phone is too thin for any lens movement that would move the lens away from the photo sensor.
Today I pulled out my Sony A7R4 after a couple of months using the phone camera.
My motivation was a photo posted in the “Boobs Shot” thread.
If you click on Dees photo and look it it closely, you will see the eyes and face are clearly in focus. The cleavage is in clear focus. The closer nipple and farther nipple are slightly out. And the background is blown out. My guess is F1.4? Fantastic, high impact photo. Dees brings your attention to her eyes first with the sharp focus. Then you explore the boobs.
Have any of you guys tried to build a modern audiophile stereo system at home? If you have, you soon realize that half (or more) of the music you love, sounds like shit on your amazing mono block amps and 10K speakers. Eventually you figure out why. It’s because your high end stereo is exposing every single detail of the recordings. The good and the bad. Your high end audio system is going to require high end recordings to sound good. When you find the high end recordings, it will blow your mind how good a home system can sound.
That’s my analogy. Your phone camera is the equivalent of a premium car stereo in a luxury car. The system kicks ass, and everything sounds good when you are jamming in the car.
But you drive to your friends house and hear his 50K home audio system and realize there is a whole new level of what sounds good. The “wholly shit” that is amazing, sounds good level.
That’s the difference. The phone camera can make some kick ass photos. The phone camera is friendly to use. It isn’t sensitive to having perfect lighting. The phone auto selects a higher ISO when needed. The phone does well in low light.
The premium camera body with the high end glass will be more demanding.
Good lighting is absolutely necessary. The camera will capture “exactly” what you are pointing it at. With absolute precision. Good or bad. If your lighting is off, the camera will show every imperfection. Just like the premium audiophile system exposes the poor recordings.
The premium camera and lens are great, once you get control of light and understand the exposure triangle. Then you have an opportunity to create that wow photo. But it will also be quick to show you when your lighting isn’t perfect.

Yes I changed her wig and camera angle. But to me, the difference is clear.
The phone cameras are amazing. But if you want that last 10%, you might want to step up to a full frame camera and premium glass.
