This is such a cool thread.
For this lighting effect i taped a peice of pipe to my rotolight to make a snoot light then held the cheese grater in front of the light.
Neat! I’ve seen people put lots of things over their lights for cool effect. Including a pasta strainer; jokingly called a “light strainer” of course. Works great for backgrounds. You could really go nuts with that sort of thing.
Great and very interesting thread for someone like me who has no idea how such pictures are made.
I have a question. Maybe this is not the right place for this but maybe someone has a link for me where I can get this information:
What is the minimum lighting equipment I need to take reasonably well lit pictures of my doll with a current smartphone.
I first started off with some super cheap ‘‘all in one’’ softboxes from Amazon. Then got some Neewer RGB LED panels which are still useful today!
There are PLENTY of youtube videos with lighting techniques for you to get some ideas. ![]()
A lot of my favourite photos have been taken with nothing more than window light
Brilliant idea!

Didn’t realise this was being taken at the time. I was taking a pic of Georgie at the doll meet and using a box of chocolates as a reflector lol. Sometimes you gotta use what you have to hand
Genius! ![]()
Well done A&E! ![]()
That setup lead to a gorgeous shot! ![]()
The above was taken with a single speed light bouncing of the ceiling to light it all, hence the glow on the right side.
The actual shot was taken with 2 speed lights (Key light and Fill Light) as shown
The room was in bright daylight and I wanted a low depth of field, so High Speed Sync was the way to go.
1/1000th, f/2.8, ISO200
In brief, the above setting kill all the ambient light meaning my flashes become the only light the camera will ‘see’. The very fast shutter is due to the very big aperture. If I was shooting more towards f/8 I’d be down to about 1/200 and not need High Speed Sync.
If you want to know more, I’d recommend this vid, along with anything on Adorama TV by Gavin Hoey

(I will not apologise for the crocs!

I’ve been struggling to achieve an effect like this for a long time. I still can’t say I understand completely, but maybe this can be done with a phone camera??
Its all about controlling your light. You certainly can achieve this sort of picture without flash using any kind of camera, but you’d likely have to work in a darker room if you were using continuous light.
its all about controlling light direction, and where the light falls.
